Vedangas means
'the limbs of the Vedas.' The Vedangas consist of six treatises and are regarded as auxiliary to, and in some sense a part of, the Vedas.
The six Vedangas discuss the following six subjects:
Siksha (
correct pronunciation),
Chandas (metre),
Nirukta (
etymology),
Vyakarana (
grammar),
Jyotisha (astronomy),
aud Kalpa (
rules governing rites and rituals).
The Upa Vedas or the subsidiary Vedas include Ayurveda, military science, music, dance and politics.
