Difference Between Voice & Virtue
Every person is making efforts for gaining Almighty God, whether he is doing good deeds of bad ones. Man’s life is moving in this definite direction. It is not possible for any one to reverse it or accelerate it, because it is a natural phenomena conferred by God. Man gets it along with his birth.
Now the question arises that when all man are performing their natural functions, why should there be difference between vice & virtue, proper and improper and good and bad? Why certain deeds are classified as virtuous whereas others as vice. Why should there be any difference between a wicked person or a virtuous soul. For arriving at an essential reconciliation of these questions, we shall have to understand the difference between good and bad deeds. In fact, no deed is bad except that their results are changed with the difference in the form of doing them. One deed can become vice or virtuous with the difference in the mode of doing it. For example, giving donation is a deed. If it is given to a deserving person or organization it is virtuous, whereas if it is given to a non-deserving person or organization, the same is a vice. Drinking wine is a deed. If it is taken as a medicine for curing a disease, then it is a befitting but if it is taken to get intoxicated, it becomes improper, causing hurt is a deed, as where if a beneficent, a harmless person is killed, then it is improper. According to court’s order, a person, hanging a criminal till death is not a vice and a person killing a lion, a snake or the wicked living beings in not treated as a sinner. If a theft is committed , a cheating is done, one tells a lie of fraud is prudentially done perforce for charity or for religious work, then it is not termed as vice. If we think over seriously, then we can very well understand that whatever deeds are done by man, they are not good or bad themselves, but the way they are done, they become vice or virtue.
For example, two cooks cook food. The food prepared by one is good, whereas the one cooked by the other fellow is not that good. People taking good food will appreciate the cook who prepared good food whereas the other cook who committed certain errors in preparing the food, his preparation will not be accepted and the people eating them will get angry with him. Also he will be punished by his master. Both the cooks had, in fact, performed their definite deeds. There was no fault in the basic job but due to difference in the method of doing it, one got appreciation whereas the other fellow got a bad name. Vice & virtue is also the same. People normally do all jobs for their progress, gaining knowledge or for their enjoyment. Except these three jobs, no one does any job for achieving any fourth aim. A saint, a devotee, a hermit, a benevolent or a wicked person, all are doing their deeds by getting impulse of the above mentioned three desires. Out of these, those who perform their duties wisely and carefully like wise cook, they are called pious men, whereas those people who work carelessly and without farsightedness, they are called vice.
To decide whether a particular deed is vice of virtuous, all the scriptures and philosophers are engaged right from the very beginning of this universe. Thousands of religious books have so for been written to define vice and virtue but no unanimous decision has so far been arrived at. Learned people of the group call certain deeds & thoughts as virtue, whereas people of the other group may call them as vice. Thus a confusion is created among the people, but no final decision is arrived at. In this connection, the opinion of the writer of ‘Mahabharat’ is found to be most appealing. ‘Bhagwan Vyas’ has written that charity is virtue whereas affecting pain to others is vice. To benefit others is virtue because it helps in increasing one’s all the three basic states. It is a definite rule that others will behave with us as we behave with them. If we do not interfere with others, they will also not interfere with us. If we make our behaviour polite, sweet, pleasing, helping, generous, then the behaviour of others will be similar to that in many ways. If we behave opposite to this, we shall have to suffer its consequences. Therefore, it is in the fitness of things that we behave well with others so that we may also be behaved well by others.
